Distribution and Status Data for Breeding Birds in the Sky Islands and adjacent Sierra Madre Occidental of northwest Mexico

Project Description

Information on the distribution and abundance of birds are important for efficient conservation planning, management, and for monitoring changes in populations across time and space. Despite high diversity and significant threats, current information on birds is not available across much of the Sky Islands region of Sonora and in the adjacent Sierra Madre of Chihuahua. We request support from SJV to expand our existing efforts surveying birds in this region during our fourth and final field season in summer 2012. If supported this project will provide data based on over 100 person days of field effort surveying birds in as many as 12 Sky Islands, provide raw data to SJV, CONANP, Pronatura and the Avian Knowledge Network to aid ongoing and future modeling efforts, and train 3 Mexican field biologists to conduct bird surveys and habitat sampling.
