Restoring hummingbird nectar plants to improve pollination services

Project Description

An initial project of the Borderlands Habitat Restoration Initiative is to enhance the nectar landscape for hummingbirds and other pollinators by adding hummingbird pollinated plants at sites along Sonoita Creek in the Santa Cruz River Watershed. This project seeks to improve pollination services so that increased fruit and seed set will provide more food for birds and other wildlife that rely on these resources. We believe that habitat restoration is not sustainable unless local citizens understand the benefits received from the restorations and actively participate in restoring ecosystems and ecosystem services in their own communities. Local community members are an integral component of this project. They will help plant and monitor survivorship and phenology of hummingbird nectar plants.
