Before the construction of dams and diversions in the Colorado River Basin, the Colorado River Delta in Mexico supported large populations of marsh birds. Pronatura Noroeste in collaboration with partners has been working on a long-term monitoring program and a binational restoration initiative in the Colorado River Delta to protect and conserve this and other groups of birds and their habitats.
Despite having lost roughly 80% of historical wetlands in the Colorado River basin, about 100,000 acres remain. These are the most important wetlands in the Sonoran Desert.
