Fondo Mexicano para la Conservación de la Naturaleza: Northwest Mexico Species Assessment Workshop Objectives: (1) Complete a matrix addressing seven scored conservation values for each species evaluated to complete a national database of ranked species; (2) Develop a database containing information addressing direct, suspected, and underlying factors for species trends and status; (3) Compile a list of avian experts that can serve on regional boards that will periodically evaluate long-term species assessment in Mexico; and (4) Develop an important tool for regional and national bird conservation planning. Project Description: Fondo Mexicano will work with the North American Bird Conservation Initiative (NABCI) to conduct three workshops to evaluate the conservation status of all bird species in Mexico, using the Partners In Flight assessment model. The information generated in these workshops will form the basis of Mexico's Bird Monitoring Strategy. This assessment model will strengthen Mexico's long-term capacity to achieve conservation of neotropical migrant and resident birds and their habitats. It will do this by holding a series of workshops aimed at addressing gaps in Mexico's bird conservation capacity and developing a strategic activity to improve conservation planning and implementation under the scope of NABCI. The main activity carried out at these workshops will be species conservation status assessment of all Mexican avifauna. This exercise will provide biologists and decision makers with detailed status assessment information for each bird species by region and habitat, including those species wintering in Mexico. This assessment exercise parallels similar efforts conducted in the United States and Canada and represents the first comprehensive bird conservation planning effort for Mexico.
