PRBO Conservation Science: Use of restored riparian habitat in the Colorado River delta in the overwintering period

Amount awarded: $5,000

Objectives: 1) describe the wintering ecology of Neotropical migrants in riparian habitat; and 2) evaluate the value of riparian restoration efforts for migrants during the nonbreeding period.

Project Description: This is the continuation of a four-year, binational project, initiated in 2004 with support from the Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Act, with the goal of providing critical guidance for the restoration of riparian vegetation to enhance wintering habitat for Neotropical migratory birds. PRBO is relating bird use, overwinter site persistence, and survivorship to silvicultural practices, water flow regimes, and other restoration activities. Work is being conducted at twenty study plots at six sites in California and Mexico. Funding from the SJV will be used to support work in the Colorado River delta, Baja California and Sonora. Mexican graduate students are using this research as the basis for theses and other students are serving as interns, allowing researchres to incorporate an intensive, biologist training component to the project.
