The Hummingbird Monitoring Network: Developing skills and partnerships needed to monitor overwintering Rufous Hummingbird populations and other North American Hummingbirds in Sinaloa, Mexico
Objectives: (1) train Sinaloan biologists and students in hummingbird banding techniques; (2) develop partnerships so HMN's coordinated monitoring coverage for hummingbirds expands to Mexico; and (3) expand Pronatura's ability to conduct scientific studies with hummingbirds.
Project Description: This proposal requests support for training and travel costs associated with establishing a monitoring site for Rufous Hummingbirds and other North America hummingbird species near El Palmito, Sinaloa. The project will begin partnerships that will help HMN fulfill its mission and provide the skills needed for biologists and students from Sinaloa to conduct hummingbird research using banding techniques approved by the North American Banding Council. These skills will expand the skill set at Pronatura so scientific studies, inventories, and monitoring can be conducted to obtain more information for this unique family of birds.
