Pronatura Noroeste: Monitoring Program for Wetland Birds in Northwestern Mexico

Objectives: (1) Develop a detailed monitoring program for wetland birds in critical sites of NW Mexico; (2) compile data and and metadata about existing monitoring or research efforts for wetland birds in Northwestern Mexico; (3) summarize the status of wetland birds in NW Mexico based on the compiled information; (4) create a plan of implementation at key areas by project partners; (5) lay the groundwork for statistically valid monitoring of long-term, species-specific population trends; (6) monitor bird use of major staging, migration, and wintering areas; and (7) ensure that bird population information is effectively integrated into the national and international bird conservation planning and implementation process.

Project Description: A partnership or organizations from the U.S. and Mexico will work together to develop a detailed monitoring program for wetland birds in critical sites of Northwestern Mexico. The program will address issues to standardize sampling schemes, temporality of surveys, field protocols, data integration and reporting, as well as the use and distribution of the information for the conservation of priority wetland birds and their habitats. The program will also offer opportunities to develop the capacity in Mexico for implementing long-term monitoring initiatives and to link monitoring with the management of Natural Protected Areas, Ramsar Wetlands, and Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network sites.
