Project Description

This project involves the implementation of an annual monitoring program for Red Knot (Calidris canutus roselaari) in the Alto Golfo de California and Colorado River Delta Biosphere Reserve, Mexico. This wintering population could be independent from that of Guerrero Negro, Baja California, and provide clues on the migratory routes of up to 68% of the global population of this declining subspecies. An additional objective is to spark the interest of local young people in conservation by providing information on the importance of the region for the shorebirds. Specific project activities include: (1) implement monthly censuses during the six months of low abundances; (2) carry out two weekly censuses in the six remaining months (high abundances); (3) determine at least to 10% of the present birds its profile of fat accumulation and its plumage; (4) capture (with mist nets) and band Red Knots and, (5) undertake at least 20 presentation (10 on shorebirds and 10 on Red Knots) in the local primary and secondary schools.
