Grupo de Ecología y Conservación de Islas was awarded $15,000 to develop an Island Biosecurity Protocol for Natividad Island, Mexico. Invasive Alien Species (IAS) is the major threat for island conservation worldwide. Natividad Island hosts 90% of the breeding population of endemic and near threatened Black-vented Shearwaters. In the past, cats decimated the seabird’s population, but currently GECI’s program of island restoration, including eradication of IAS is underway in the region. To keep those populations safe of IAS, a biosecurity protocol is essential for prevention, early detection, and rapid response to threats. Working in collaboration and participation with local stakeholders and government agencies, the biosecurity protocol will increase the conservation and resilience of Natividad Island.
