GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Sonoran Joint Venture is a transnational alliance that brings together diverse partners from the U.S. and Mexico to conserve the unique birds and habitats of the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. Our mission is to build inclusive partnerships to steward just, equitable, healthy, and resilient environments for the unique birds, wildlife, and people of the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico.
The Sonoran Joint Venture (SJV) seeks a Mexico Coordinator to grow, strengthen, and sustain the activities of the SJV in Mexico. Responsibilities include building and maintaining partnerships that support the conservation priorities of the SJV, including identifying and strengthening strategic relationships; supporting SJV Working Groups and partners; facilitating cross-border collaboration; and providing training and technical assistance to Mexican partners. The ideal candidate will show initiative in planning and undertaking actions and activities to shape strong, effective partnerships in Mexico with transnational connections to the United States. They must be able to work independently, using personal initiative and creativity to complete the objectives described above.
This position will report to the SJV Coordinator. It will require travel throughout the SJV geography, particularly in Mexico. When not traveling, work will be out of a home office or the offices of Pronatura Noroeste in Ensenada, Baja California (details below).

MAJOR DUTIES
The SJV Mexico Coordinator is responsible for building and maintaining partnerships in Mexico that support the conservation priorities of the Sonoran Joint Venture. The Mexico Coordinator works in close coordination with the rest of the SJV staff (Coordinator, Science Coordinator, Education and Outreach Coordinator) to support Mexican partners in transnational collaboration for bird and habitat stewardship in the SJV region. Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Build and maintain strategic relationships with Mexican federal, state, and local government agencies and conservation organizations, research institutions, communities, and individuals; work with SJV Science Coordinator and partners to achieve the conservation objectives and priorities of the SJV Conservation Implementation Plan in Mexico, including generally increasing support for bird conservation in Mexico.
- Develop or assist in the development of grant proposals to obtain new sources of funding or other resources needed to support partner work to address SJV conservation priorities in Mexico, and to support this position.
- Represent the SJV in Mexico and share the work and priorities of the SJV at meetings and on working groups identified as priorities.
- Conduct site visits with SJV partners in Mexico to learn about their work and strengthen promote existing and future relationships.
- Support and participate in effective transnational partnerships and working groups with approval from the SJV Coordinator.
- Serve on the review committee for the SJV Awards Program and recruit Mexican partners to serve on this committee.
- Serve as co-chair of the SJV Science Working Group in conjunction with the SJV Science Coordinator.
- Prepare for and participate in staff meetings, science working group meetings, workshops, and SJV Management Board meetings; help coordinate logistics for meetings in Mexico.
Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications Required by the Position
- Demonstrated alignment with the mission and vision of the Sonoran Joint Venture.
- Advanced degree in natural resources, conservation, environmental planning or related field, or equivalent in work experience in place of degree.
- Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in environmental stewardship or conservation implementation in Mexico; experience in northwest Mexico and the U.S.-Mexico border region preferred.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the conservation models/landscape and associated government agency structures in Mexico, including federal, states, municipalities, and non-profit organizations.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in Spanish and English; ability to give effective presentations in Spanish and English; ability to write and edit technical and formal documents in Spanish, and to read technical documents in Spanish and English.
- Ability to build partnerships/relationships with the conservation community, SJV partners, and other key audiences to strengthen efforts of the Sonoran Joint Venture.
- Ability to work independently and apply sound judgment when interacting with government officials, funders, conservation institutions, biologists, and land stewards.
- Ability and willingness to travel within Mexico and to the United States as needed to support the SJV (must have current passport and visa to travel to the United States).

Salary and Benefits
Base salary $32,000 – $36,000 mn monthly, commensurate with experience, plus all benefits required by Mexican law (equivalent to a gross salary of $720,000 – $770,00 mn annually); this position includes computer and IT equipment and software, mileage reimbursed for use of personal vehicle; travel expenses
Initial six-month contract, renewable for an additional 12 months depending on satisfactory performance; extendable for additional years contingent upon securing continued funding
Location
Flexible, but within the primary geography of the SJV in Mexico (Sonora, Baja California, or Baja California Sur) and reasonably close to a major airport (preferred locations: Ensenada or Hermosillo); travel by plane, bus, car, etc. expected and required.
This position will work from the offices Pronatura Noroeste in Ensanada, Baja California or remotely from home in Sonora, Baja California, or Baja California Sur. Work may also be a combination of home office and Pronatura Noroeste Ensenada office.
Conditions of Employment
- Must hold Mexican citizenship or have legal status to work in Mexico.
- Must have current passport and be able to travel internationally.
- Must have a current visa to travel to the United States (B1/B2 is sufficient).
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Must have demonstrable excellent driving skills.
- Must be able to demonstrably speak, read, and write fluently in Spanish, and read and speak conversationally fluent in English.
