Fostering Actions for Waterbird Habitat Conservation in Sonora, Mexico

Project Description

Waterbirds are experiencing consistent steep population declines throughout the continent, mainly due to habitat loss. Coastal areas have been modified by urban sprawl, agriculture, and aquaculture. This trend can be reversed through the conservation of key coastal habitats. The objective of this project is to strengthen the capacity of a sea salt production company located at Bahia Lobos, Sonora, to implement conservation actions on their 1,600 ha property, which includes mudflats and salt ponds. We will train students and company employees to conduct waterbird surveys to monitor populations during the breeding and non-breeding seasons. The ultimate goal is to use these monitoring results to guide on-site conservation actions for waterbird protection.
