Promoting Local Leadership in Collaborative Monitoring of Priority Species

Grantee: Prescott College Kino Bay Center for Cultural and Ecological Studies
Project Award: $15,000

The Prescott College Kino Bay Center for Cultural and Ecological Studies was awarded $15,000 for the continuation of the project Promoting local leadership in collaborative monitoring of priority species for conservation of critical habitat. The goal of this project is to elevate the inclusion of local knowledge and conservation planning by indigenous community leaders in support of the protection of priority avian species in coastal Sonora, Mexico. Building on past work, in 2023-2024 they will continue monitoring efforts and move forward with the creation of community-based habitat protection plans and projects for beach-nesting shorebirds (Least Tern, Snowy Plover, Wilson’s Plover, American Oystercatcher), as well as Black Brant and Craveri’s Murrelet. They will also contribute to the development of a Murrelet Conservation Plan in collaboration with regional partners.
